A.J. Burnett will return to pitch in '14, per source. Burnett will be open to pitching for a club other than the Pirates— Travis Sawchik (@Sawchik_Trib) January 28, 2014
This is simple: the Pirates would be better with AJ Burnett in 2014 than without him, and they've said repeatedly that they have money reserved to bring him back. Now we get to see what really happens.
Mark Madden just flipped out about the AJ Burnett news on the DVE morning show. Basically, he was saying that the Pirates won't bring him back because he costs too much, that the Nutting/Coonelly crew doesn't care about winning (just profits) and that the Pirates PR used Burnett's and Hurdle's disagreement over starting Game 5 of the NLDS to turn the public against Burnett and ease his departure from the team. It was one of the most cynical tirades I have ever listened to, but a part of me that has been watching the Bucs for the past 20 years worries he may be right. Was the 2013 season all a dream?
@cytopathic_effect The last three seasons the win total has been 72, 79, 94 so I give them the benefit of the doubt on this. I also bear no ill will towards AJ who I was believe was sincere on staying a Pirate until he realized he'd leave too much money on the table.
