Spring training can be meaningless and comforting at the same time

Written by Pat Lackey on .

Spring training doesn't mean much in the long run, but when Andrew McCutchen goes 3-for-3 with a double and a homer while Pedro Alvarez chips in an RBI double, it's always a welcome sight. Also worth noting is a strong outing by Brian Burres (two scoreless innings, two hits, no walks, three strikeouts), who probably has an outside shot to take Scott Olsen's roster spot if Olsen can't hurry back from his strained hamstring.

On the flip side, Kevin Correia's Pirate debut today wasn't all that strong, but hey, it didn't count!
