The Pirates were losing to the Giants 1-0, then Clint Barmes hit a three-run home run, then you started to wonder if maybe this season really is going to be the one that's different. It's OK. You can admit it. We're all in the same boat now.
Got home last night from an event and went to computer to check the score. The Pirates had men on 2nd and 3rd against Bumgarner in the 7th and Barmes was at bat.....Wait for it.....3-run HR??? Are you kidding me? I pinched myself the rest of the evening. Nice going to Charlie too - 8 very solid innings competing vs Bumgarner.
Here is what I liked:
The all right-handed lineup against Bumgardener, Neil Walker notwithstanding.
The quick hook on Morton in the 8th. Give me fresh arms!
2:29 game time. Nice efficient outing! Us "olds" can't stay up until 2AM for the Bucs no matter how hard we try.
Man, living in SF means I don't get to go to many Pirates games in person, but it sure makes games like this sweet. I hadn't even finished screaming about the inane Walker bunt when Barmes somehow crushed that HR.
Then I bombed some Giants fans on the jumbotron with my Buccos hat, then I got some whiskey down the street with my buds, and then I biked then five minutes to my apartment. Love it when the Buccos come to town.
There was a little kid a row in front of me with a Pirates hat, who his dad described as a frontrunning Pirates fan. (His little league team is the Pirates and he started rooting for them when he learned they were in first.) THERE ARE LITTLE KIDS WHO ARE FRONTRUNNING PIRATES FANS! THAT'S A THING THAT EXISTS!
@Operation Shutdown That is basically how I became a Pirate fan in Queens in 1979. It was mostly the Little League experience but having it reinforced with a WS win didn't hurt.
In 1988 I was on a team called the Pirates and I started following them because they were better than the Cubs. So as an 8 year old Iowan, I was a frontrunner Pirates fan. I've stuck with them ever since. Maybe that kid will be the same as me.
