The second place Pittsburgh Pirates are in Cincinnati to play the first place Reds. In August. This is what we Pirate fans have been waiting for since at least 1997 and probably since 1992. This is real, meaningful baseball. It's here.
Wandy Rodriguez gets the ball for the Pirates. Mat Latos gets it for the Reds. Latos is having a pretty strong first season with the Reds, but he's got a home run problem (20 in 127 1/3 innings). The Pirates hit home runs like pretty much no one else. Rodriguez had a decent but shaky first start with the Pirates, but this is his first start that doesn't come against his old teammates in Houston. I imagine that the pressure on this one is probably nothing compared to the weirdness of making his first Pirate start against the Astros.
First pitch is 7:10.
This one hurts. They played pretty good for five innings, then just fell apart just enough to cost them the win.
What I see in the past week or two is an entire team pressing. On offense they're trying to hit a home run with every swing, but striking out instead. On defense it's like they want to make sure a man never gets on base, so they're rushing trying to make spectacular plays. Close plays at first become errors with runners advancing and no outs. The outfielders are taking risky approaches trying to cut a ball off before it drops, and it ends up becoming a double to the wall.
I suggest they start watching more slacker comedies soon, starting with this rain delay. How about Superbad?
Carnegie Chip. Forgot to mention Hurdle will help end the 19 year losing streak. The Rockies were good when they had Hurdle and now they have Tracey and they are bad.....do you want Tracey back? He should be available this offseason.
Carnegie Chip. I know.....hard to believe we went 57-105 games two years ago before Hurdle arrived. This year will we have the second highest attendance in our history which should help down the road toward getting better players. Hard to believe we were able to keep all our top prospects at this trading deadline.
Just sit in the dugout and watch the game, Hurdle. Good grief, three batters in and he's overmanaging already.
