... The Pirates did what any team in their position as a small money team would do. Basically start over from scratch. They have got the payroll under their control not a bunch of agents with veteran players seeking large contracts. If they draft well they can bring up new players as the older players approach free agency and maybe trade those players for either players they can afford or a few prospects. In this day and age all teams rent players. Some teams can afford to rent players for a longer period of time. |

... On a side note; did anyone read the article on Ross Ohlendorf in this week's Sports Illustrated? |

Russell I dig JR too. I don't know what the hell people expect from him; he's managing a transitioning team. If the prospects develop, I'm sure Russell will be as good a manager as any. Even Leyland said when he had good players he was a great manager and when he didn't he wasn't. |

I'm willing to give JR a shot this year But I have to say, when JR had Ohlendorf swing with 1 out and the bases loaded and McCutchen on deck down by 1 or 2 runs late in the game... I pretty much saw that this guy doesn't understand percentages. I had quickly calculated an 80% chance of GDIP from looking at Ohlie's batted ball stats. Predictably, Ohlie GDIP'd and the Pirates lost the game. On the other hand, I think his handling of the pitchers is pretty good. |
