Rocco Baldelli signs with Boston E-mail

Welp, there goes that.

The week before Christmas I wrote a post wondering who Jack Wilson thought the Pirates were going to "go out and get" when he said that the team needed "more players." Baldelli signing with Boston is exactly what I meant. There's no real reason for Baldelli to sign with the Red Sox over the Pirates beyond the fact that the Red Sox are the Red Sox and the Pirates are the Pirates. In Boston, he'll be behind Jason Bay, JD Drew, David Ortiz, and probably Jacoby Ellsbury on the OF/DH depth chart. In Pittsburgh, he would've had every chance to start. Now, I obviously don't know all the details of his health, but I'd think playing time would be important to a guy trying to prove he was healthy.

You can blame this on the team not ponying enough cash for Baldelli, but that sure wasn't the case with Daniel Cabrera and I doubt that's the case here. You can say Baldelli's from New England, sure, but it's not like Pittsburgh is an incredibly long flight from Rhode Island. And we've got some pretty good health care in the city, if that's what he's concerned with.

So really, what useful player is going to sign here right now?

Maybe Baldelli was upset about Clatch selling out...

Unless he's not really healthy and wants the part-time opportunity in Boston. Otherwise you're pretty much right.

McClatchy's outta here, sells his remaining shares, skips town and washes his hands of the Pirates organization. So besides PNC Park, McClatchy's time in Pittsburgh was a complete failure or just a minimal failure?

Well, F me in the A.

Good post, Pat, as usual. All they could get now is past-their-primers looking for one last paycheck before they call it a career.

Folks can scream all they want about spending money on free agents, but this isn't like going to the grocery store, picking out the prime cut of filet mignon you want, then taking it to the register to pay for it. In this world, the beef gets to decide if it wants to go home with you, and apparently, all the Pirates can hope for is some expired ground chuck.

Oliver Perez.

Also - Jeff Andrews is the pitching coach for Spokane in the Northwest League. Quite a precipitous drop from MLB to a rookie short-season league.

I don't know why the hell the Pirates would want any free agents. At this point I would spend EVERY penny on the draft and the minors. Baldelli to me wouldn't have been that great of a pick up. He just wouldn't make enough difference and would have been gone before the team was any good.

Trade McLouth, who probably peaked and get what you can. Of course I would've let Adam LaRoche go too.

In this economy, no one is going to the park to see a losing team anyway. It's the perfect time to go all young and truly rebuild.

Welllll...the Pirates in still in Pittsburgh, and, when McClatchy bought the club, that was far from being a given. We should all be thankful for that, as opposed to bemoaning the ineptitude of the Las Vegas Pirates.

You're dead-on, Curtis. Frankly, I think his decision is probably a good one for the Pirates. There is no earthly reason he would go to Boston over Pittsburgh (money being equal, as it likely was) besides not TRULY being healthy enough to play. Imagine if he signed here for 2-3 years and played a grand total of 150 games. We'd all be talking about him like we do Derek Bell.

As a Pirates fan who lives in Vegas, I wish I was bemoaning the Las Vegas Pirates. In reality, the Pirates will win the NL Central before there is a baseball team in Vegas. We have the worst AAA facility in baseball and no support to build a major league retractable dome. Our only shot at pro sports in Vegas would be NBA or NHL. With no facility for those sports to be built until after an economic recover, I would say it is safe to say that there will be no pro teams in Vegas for at least 5 years.

No one wants to sign here because we have a bunch of cheapshits running the damn team! Look at the Steelers; people who suit up for the Steelers whether by free agency or by the draft alaways say what an honor it is to play for them because they know how to win. All Nutjob cares about is profiting, and don't want to pay out big bucks, which leads to constant losing then no one wants to play for your team since they always lose. People want to play for the Yankees because they pay good money. Dammit, I STILL say salary caps work, and yes, I know, I'll mention the Steelers again because the Rooneys do a great job managing under a cap. I know just because there would be a spending limit doesn't mean Nutting would use the whole amount, but salary floors ought to be instituted as well. I wish there were a rule in MLB that if an owner didn't win after so many years, the league would look at how the team's being managed both off and on the field and if you weren't winning because you weren't spending money on players, then the owner would be forced to give up the team to someone who was able to both win and profit. Doesn't Nutjob understand that more wins would put more asses in seats? I am totally appalled at the Pirate ownership. We need a Daniel Snyder- he wouldn't put up with the year-in/year-out losing bullshit, and D.C. is just 4 or 5 hours driving from Pittsburgh. I wish Nutting could be overthrown somehow. :(

I didn't finish my thought about the Steelers and salary caps-the Rooneys know how to spend only what the NFL allows and still manages to win almost year-in and year-out. And, no, the Steelers and Penguins both winning now doesn't even come close to making it even out the Pirates losing all the time. Those other two teams DON'T make up for the Pirates losing. I like to see the Penguins win, but I can't watch hockey, I don't really get into it and we need the winning to continue once the Steelers are done with their season.
